How to Land the Job You Really Want

Most of us don’t have a money tree in our backyard, which means we need to work to support our lifestyle, whether we’re minimalists or have a more expensive taste. To make the money that suits our lifestyle, we need to have a job that pays for that specific lifestyle.

For some of us, we just take a job that is offered to us so that we can support our families; however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t aim for the job you want. If there’s a certain position out there calling you, use the following tips to land it.

Do the research.

There may be a certain job you want, but you need to first ensure you know what that job entails.

The first thing you need to do is research the position you have your eye on. Find out what type of experience and skills are needed for someone in that position and what responsibilities a person in this position typically has.

When you’re more familiar with all this information, it will help you showcase that you have what it takes for the position you want and help you in the negotiation phase of the job.

Have the right experience.

Most employers require you to have a certain amount or type of experience for certain positions. Sometimes this can be negotiable, but sometimes it’s not.

To land the job you want, you need to have the necessary experience for that position. This may mean you need to start working for the company in a different position and work your way up, or it may mean you need to have a different job for a while to gain the skills needed for that position.

You should also be sure your resume highlights the skills you have. For instance, if you have worked as a server before, chances are you have the skills needed to multitask and handle a fast-paced environment. Again, there are resume samples you can use that will help you find the right way to showcase your experience.

Have the right skills.

Aside from having the right experience, you also need to have certain skills for certain positions. This can be gained through the experience you have, but it can also be acquired by taking classes or earning certifications in specific areas. Be sure to take the classes necessary to help you earn the skills needed for that job.

Get creative.

Sometimes the best way to land the job you want is to get extremely creative with how you market yourself. For instance, Bennett Olson from Minnesota landed a dream job by putting an advertisement for himself on a digital billboard.

Loving his creativity and perseverance, a high-ranking advertising agency reached out and hired him. There are plenty of things you can do to stand out from other prospective hires when it comes to landing your dream job—you just simply need to think of what would be the right angle for you.

Stand out.

If you have an interview, keep in mind these people will have interviewed multiple other people for the position as well. To make them see your value, you need to find a way to stand out from the other people interviewing.

Be sure to have documented proof of what type of value you will bring to the company, whether this includes a portfolio of your work or testimonials from past employers/customers. Also, sometimes the interview itself provides you with an opportunity to stand out. For instance, if you’re interviewing for a sales position and they say they’ll give you time to review a product and make a pitch, stand out by telling them you’ll make a pitch right there on the spot.

Chances are nobody else in the interview has done this, and as long as your pitch is good, the company will certainly remember you.

Send personalized thank you’s.

After the interview is over, be sure to send a personalized thank you to those who interviewed you. If you really want to stand out, doing this on a handwritten card is much more effective than sending an email.

Landing your dream job will be hard work without the right skills from, say, Excelsia College online. Still, as long as you know what you’re doing and are sure you can bring value to the company, the hard work will pay off, and you’ll find yourself with the job you love wherever you are, and that includes looking for engineering jobs in Boston, or somewhere else. The world really is at your fingertips with the Internet, and to all the information you need to land the job you really want!
