I want to write briefly about how to start a business in New Zealand. When I say briefly, I do not mean a few bullet points and a quick rave about how great a business person I am ending in my kind offer to give you 15% off my latest book titled “how to grow money” or some such. The lesson in those books is that the way the authors grow money or think positive or whatever they are raving about as their secret technique is quite simple. They wrote pages and pages of advice that can be freely found online or in your library, packaged it as their own, and grew money by finding people desperate enough to buy the book.
The same goes for the title of “Entrepreneur” these days you can find all sorts of guides and books, or even degrees at universities etc that are marketed at helping you become one. Let me be very clear on this. If you have ideas that can make money, then you are already an Entrepreneur and if you have actually started and are making money already then you can call yourself a successful Entrepreneur because the title has no meaning about how much money you earn etc, it simply means that you are a person who thinks about how to make money or to get your own product or design out to the world and make enough money to keep it happening. It is basically just another name for someone who likes the idea of business. So please do not be duped or conned into thinking that this awesome new title means a lot because the reality is that it is often well over emphasized in order to get you to sign up to something or to buy something.
I have read a few books on how to make more money or have a better life etc I think the last one I read was “think and grow rich” by Napoleon Hill. In there he outlines how positive thinking can help you. Let me start by saying that the idea of thinking positive, while important to you feeling happy and good about what you are doing is one of the dumbest idea’s ever to make it to paper for a reason that I’m sure many very normal people would easily recognize. Positive thought is only healthy if the thing you are thinking about are correct. If it is wrong or slightly off course or anything else, then the old saying “you can’t polish a turd” comes swiftly to mind. If you are thinking positively about something that is not possible, then you are a gullible idiot. If you want a more intelligent book I suggest any kids book on the market. Seriously, its also a fairy tale I admit, but at least A: It doesn’t lie about that and B: In fairy tales the prince or the frog or the princess or whoever the character is, often has to go through lots of hardship to get what they want in life, and those that sit there thinking positively ( Cinderella’s sisters come to mind ) end up in tears because they had high hopes but no action toward their dreams. Valuable lesson.
Right so far we have learnt
- Books on how to become rich are just somebody else’s product that you are being sold on.
- Entrepreneur is a word that is often over used to sell to you.
Ok that’s probably enough for today. I want to give very basic lessons that you can then go and digest over a week while you wait for my next piece. Next week I will write more about how to start a business here in New Zealand where we will start to get into the actual details. Please remember, all of my articles are available on my website www.giftplanet.co.nz in my articles section. Its completely free to register and use, and of course I don’t write books and I don’t allow others to advertise on my site.
My business is in supplying products, so it is very much in my interests to see you do well and keep you from people trying to sell you freely available information.
