Stress is a killer and small business owners have more than their fare share.
Here are the things that I do to reduce stress in my life. They work really well and I hope that they will benefit you.
Give up alcohol
Or dramatically reduce it. I only have one bottle of beer or a glass of wine Saturday and Sunday. If I go out during the week I use my weekend allocation then I don’t drink in the weekend.
You may think alcohol helps you numb the days stress but its a depressant and it makes you fat and sluggish. I found that drinking two glasses of wine a night made me fat, sleepy and cranky with a short fuse. Since I have reduced my intake to two glasses a week I feel great! I lost the fat and my brain feels more clear. I also don’t miss it. Just replace the habit with a glass of juice (no added sugar).
I exercise every second day enough to sweat and get my heart rate up. When you give up alcohol you will find you have more energy as well. Exercise also reduces stress and helps you sleep at night.
Get 8 hours sleep
I thought I only needed 6 hours sleep a night. I read that you should have 8 regardless so I tried it and now I feel less tired during the day. If you find you are not sleepy at night and your watching TV or playing around on the internet then go to bed and read.
Get a pet if you don’t have kids
Being responsible for another living thing is a great way to forget about your own troubles. We don’t have kids so instead we have a few dogs, a few cats and some other wild life we feed every day. Walking the dogs is also a great way to clear your mind and get some exercise.
Don’t watch/read the news
We all know that news is used by the media businesses as padding for their ads. The best news to attract viewers has to be negative – some war – some rape – some murder. Why fill your head with this crap?
Half the time the media create content out of thin air or use Twitter threads to fill their empty slots. If its major and important news then no doubt you will hear about it from someone.
What items are in your life that cause you stress or anxiety? If they are not vital then get rid of them.
For example I don’t have a mobile. I find them annoying and intrusive. I have staff members who deal with smartphones and the technology on them. I also culled a few friends that were making my life hell – why should you have that in your life?
I cannot tell you have stress reducing gardening is. Wow!! Working with the soil and watching a plant grow that you planted from seed is AWESOME! Every time I look at my garden and sit within it I feel at one with the world. Nothing is important anymore.
Or have some other artistic outlet. I created this blog solely to voice my opinion. Then I thought I might has well invite others to post so they can vent as well. Get what is inside your head causing trouble and transfer it to a medium that other people might enjoy.
