    I believe that this is incorrect. If the Pound Sterling were still backed by a pound of silver, the exchange rate would be somewhere in excess of $300 per pound. The Pound became pegged to the dollar instead of actual asset holdings at Bretton Woods in 1940, and then was allowed to float in 1972.
